How to Style a Camel Coat with Long Skirts and Dresses

If I could keep only one winter coat, it would be camel. It goes with black, navy, grey, cream and almost every print I own, and it makes even a simple sweater and skirt look put together. A camel coat is one of those pieces that quietly works every single day from November to March.
Here's how I choose and style a camel coat so it looks right over long skirts and dresses.
Choose a camel coat that works with long skirts
The coat matters more than the outfit underneath, so it's worth getting the shape right.
- Length. A coat that ends at the knee or mid-calf looks best over long skirts. A very short coat cuts the line in half, and a coat that ends right where the skirt ends can look heavy. If your skirts are maxi length, a mid-calf coat with a few inches of skirt showing below looks elegant. My guide to what coat to wear with long skirts goes into lengths in more detail.
- Cut. A straight or softly A-line coat sits nicely over a full skirt. A very fitted coat can pull across the hips when you wear it over a pleated or tiered skirt.
- Collar. A notch collar looks classic and tailored. A wrap coat with a tie belt feels softer and more feminine. A funnel or shawl collar keeps your neck warm without a scarf.
- Fabric. Wool or a wool blend holds its shape and stays warm. My fabric guide explains what the different wools feel like and how warm they are.
- Shade. Camel ranges from pale oat to deep caramel. Lighter shades feel soft and fresh; deeper shades hide wear and look rich with black.
Colors that look best with camel
Camel is warm and neutral, so it plays well with almost anything. These are the combinations I come back to most.
- Camel and black. The most classic pairing. A black maxi skirt, black knit and a camel coat look polished for work or shul. See my long black skirt guide for more ways to wear it.
- Camel and cream. Soft, light and very elegant. A cream sweater with an oat or ivory skirt under a camel coat looks luxurious without trying.
- Camel and navy. A little more crisp than black, and lovely with gold jewelry.
- Camel and grey. A charcoal skirt with a heather grey knit feels calm and modern.
- Camel and burgundy or forest green. Deep jewel tones make camel glow. These are perfect for Yom Tov and winter simchas.

What to wear under a camel coat
Because the coat is the star, simple pieces underneath work best.
- A fine knit and a midi or maxi skirt. A turtleneck or crew neck sweater with a pleated, knit or A-line skirt is my everyday formula. My turtleneck guide shows how to layer one under almost anything.
- A sweater dress. A camel coat over a long knit dress is warm, quick and looks finished. More in modest sweater dresses.
- A blouse and a tailored skirt. For work or meetings, a silk or button-down blouse with a wool skirt looks sharp under camel.
- A long denim skirt and a chunky knit. For weekends and errands, camel dresses up denim in a relaxed way. See how to style a long denim skirt.
If you get cold easily, my winter layering guide covers thin layers that fit under a coat without adding bulk.
Scarves and headscarves
A scarf is the easiest way to change the look of a camel coat from day to day.
- A cream or oatmeal chunky scarf keeps everything soft and tonal. My chunky scarf guide shows a few easy ways to wrap one.
- A plaid or check scarf in camel, black and cream adds a classic British feel.
- A pop of color like blush, rust or emerald brightens a grey day.
If you cover your hair, a camel coat goes with almost any headscarf color. Cream, black, blush and burgundy all look lovely against it. I share more on matching in how to match a headscarf to your outfit.

Shoes and bags
- Knee-high boots in brown or black look polished with a mid-calf coat and a long skirt. See knee-high boots with skirts.
- Ankle boots with opaque tights are comfortable for long days. My ankle boots with long skirts post has tips on getting the gap right.
- Loafers or flats work on dry days and for Shabbos walks.
- A structured bag in black, cognac or cream keeps the look tailored.
Outfit ideas
### Weekday classic
A black turtleneck, a black pleated maxi skirt, black tights and knee-high boots under a camel coat. Add a cream scarf and small gold earrings. It's simple, warm and always looks put together.
### Shabbos morning
A navy fine-knit dress with a thin belt, pearl studs and a cream headscarf, under a camel wrap coat. Finish with suede loafers or low heeled boots. If you want more ideas for the day, see my Shabbos and Yom Tov outfit ideas.
### Tonal and soft
A cream cable-knit sweater, an oatmeal knit skirt and tan boots under a light camel coat. Keep jewelry gold and simple. This all-neutral look feels very elegant in person.
### Winter simcha
A burgundy velvet dress with a gold brooch at the collar, sheer black tights and black block heels under a deep camel coat. My velvet dress guide has more ways to dress it up.
### Weekend errands
A long denim skirt, a grey sweatshirt or chunky knit, a plaid scarf and comfortable ankle boots. The camel coat keeps the whole thing from looking too casual.
How to care for a camel coat
- Brush it. A soft clothes brush after wearing removes dust and keeps the wool looking fresh.
- Hang it properly. Use a wide wooden hanger so the shoulders keep their shape.
- Spot clean. Light-colored camel shows marks, so treat spots quickly with a damp cloth. Dry clean only when it really needs it.
- De-pill gently. Use a fabric shaver or sweater comb on areas that rub, like under the arms.

FAQ
### Is a camel coat still in style?
Yes. A camel coat is a timeless classic that comes back every winter. Clean shapes in good wool never really go out of style.
### What length camel coat is best for long skirts?
A knee-length to mid-calf coat usually looks best. Let a few inches of skirt show below the hem, or choose a coat long enough to cover most of the skirt.
### Can I wear a camel coat with black?
Absolutely. Camel and black is one of the most classic winter combinations and works for work, shul and evenings out.
### What color headscarf goes with a camel coat?
Cream, ivory, black, blush, burgundy and soft grey all look lovely with camel. A tonal cream or oat scarf looks the most polished.
### Is a camel coat practical for everyday?
Yes, especially in a medium or deeper shade, which hides everyday wear better than very pale oat.
