Shabbos and Yom Tov Outfit Ideas: Elegant, Comfortable and Easy
Getting dressed for Shabbos is one of my favorite parts of the week. There is something special about putting on clothes that are a little nicer than what you wore all week. But Shabbos and Yom Tov outfits also have to do a lot: look elegant at shul, stay comfortable through a long meal, survive little hands and spilled grape juice, and still feel right for a walk in the afternoon.
Here is how I plan outfits that do all of that.
The three Shabbos looks
I think of Shabbos in three parts, and many of us dress a little differently for each.
Friday night. Often the dressiest. Candle lighting, the first meal, guests. A beautiful dress or an elegant skirt and top.
Shabbos morning. Shul and the main meal. Polished and comfortable: a structured dress, a suit-style set or a pretty skirt with a blouse.
Shabbos afternoon. More relaxed. A soft knit dress, a "Shabbos robe" style or a comfortable maxi skirt and a knit top for walks, napping and visiting friends.
You don't need three new outfits every week, of course. But it helps to know which pieces in your closet belong to which part of Shabbos.
Fabrics that feel special but stay comfortable
- Crepe and ponte don't wrinkle and are comfortable to sit in for hours.
- Satin skirts dress up a simple sweater instantly.
- Velvet is perfect for winter Shabbosim and Chanukah.
- Cotton poplin and seersucker are lovely for hot summer Shabbosim.
- Fine merino knits keep you warm in a cold shul without bulk.
Fall and winter ideas
- A velvet midi dress in navy, emerald or burgundy, with simple pearl earrings.
- A satin skirt with a soft cashmere or merino sweater, tucked at the front, with pointed flats.
- A knit set (matching sweater and skirt) in camel or grey for the afternoon.
- A long-sleeve brocade or jacquard dress, which feels festive enough for Yom Tov.
- A wool A-line skirt with a turtleneck and a long coat for walking to shul.
Spring and summer ideas
- A smocked cotton dress with puff sleeves, worn with a thin fitted layer underneath if needed.
- A linen-blend maxi skirt with a short-sleeve knit top.
- A pleated skirt in a soft color with a crisp blouse.
- A printed midi dress with a light cardigan for air-conditioned shuls.
Yom Tov dressing
Yom Tov is a great time for a little extra. Pesach and Shavuos call for fresh spring colors and florals. Sukkos often means layering, because evenings in the sukkah get cold. Rosh Hashanah is traditionally a time for white or light colors for many people, and elegant, structured pieces.
Because Yom Tov often means two or three days in a row (or a Yom Tov going straight into Shabbos), plan your outfits in advance:
- Lay out each day's outfit with shoes and accessories.
- Choose pieces that mix: one skirt with two different tops counts as two outfits.
- Have a comfortable, still-pretty option for the afternoons.
Dressing with kids in the picture
If you are holding a baby or chasing toddlers, choose:
- Washable fabrics. Cotton, ponte and polyester crepe instead of silk.
- Dark or busy prints, which hide stains.
- Nursing-friendly cuts with buttons or wrap fronts if you need them.
- Flats you can run in.
Shoes and accessories
For Shabbos I love pointed flats, loafers and low block heels. You walk a lot on Shabbos, often on uneven sidewalks, so comfort matters. Keep accessories simple: a pearl necklace, a pretty headband or hair bow, and a small bag for those who use an eruv.
Making it easy every week
The best trick I know is a small "Shabbos capsule": about ten pieces that all go together. For example:
- 2 dresses
- 3 skirts (one satin, one pleated, one knit)
- 4 tops or sweaters
- 2 pairs of shoes
That gives you dozens of combinations, and you'll never stand in front of the closet at candle lighting time again. If you want help building one, my capsule wardrobe guide walks through it.
You'll find dresses and skirts I love for Shabbos on the Dresses and Skirts pages, and current sale finds on the deals page.
Gut Shabbos!
Quick answers
What do I wear for a long Shabbos walk? A knit or denim skirt, a soft sweater, a long coat in winter, and your most comfortable flats or sneakers if your community is comfortable with them.
How do I keep a Shabbos outfit warm in a cold shul? Layer a thin thermal top under your sweater and wear opaque tights. A long cardigan you can take off at home is easier than a heavy sweater.
What are good Yom Tov colors? Many women love white and light colors for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, fresh pastels and florals for Pesach and Shavuos, and warm, cozy tones for Sukkos.
