How to Style a White Blouse in Winter: Warm, Modest Outfit Ideas

A crisp white blouse is one of those pieces I never want to put away, even when it's snowing. It brightens a dark winter outfit, looks fresh under a sweater, and makes a simple skirt feel dressed up. The trick is making it feel wintry instead of summery.
Here's how I wear a white blouse from December through February and stay warm doing it.
Choose the right white blouse for winter
Not every white blouse works in cold weather. These details make the biggest difference.
- Heavier fabrics. A thicker cotton poplin, cotton flannel, a crepe or a silk with some weight feels right for winter. Very sheer or gauzy blouses read as summer.
- Long sleeves with a proper cuff. A buttoned cuff or a gathered wrist looks neat peeking out of a sweater sleeve.
- A collar that layers well. A pointed collar, a Peter Pan collar, a ruffled high neck or a pussy bow all look pretty above a crew-neck knit.
- Ivory or soft white. A creamier white often looks warmer and more wintry than stark optical white, especially next to camel, grey and burgundy.
If the blouse is a little sheer, wear a thin shell or camisole underneath. My guide to layering slips and shells covers what works best.
Layer it under a sweater
This is my favorite way to wear a white blouse in winter. Only the collar and cuffs show, and the sweater does the warm work.
- Crew-neck sweater. Pull the collar out over the neckline and fold the cuffs over the sweater sleeves. It looks polished with almost any skirt.
- Cable-knit or chunky sweater. A white collar softens a heavy knit and keeps it from looking too casual. See how to style a cable-knit sweater.
- Fair Isle sweater. A ruffled white collar with a patterned knit feels cozy and festive. More in my Fair Isle sweater guide.
- Collared look, without the bulk. If you love the collar but not the extra layer, a collared sweater gives you the same look in one piece.

Add a sweater vest or cardigan
A sweater vest over a white blouse is a classic for a reason. It shows off the sleeves and keeps your middle warm. My sweater vest guide has plenty of combinations.
A cardigan works the same way. A cropped cardigan buttoned over a white blouse looks neat with a long skirt, while a long cardigan feels relaxed for weekdays. See cropped cardigans with long skirts and how to style a long cardigan.
Pair it with winter skirts
The skirt is what makes a white blouse look like winter. Heavier, richer fabrics do the job.
- Wool and tweed skirts. A white blouse with a grey wool or tweed skirt looks crisp and classic. See my tweed skirt guide.
- Plaid skirts. White is the easiest top to wear with a busy plaid. More ideas in how to style a plaid skirt.
- Velvet skirts. A white blouse with a velvet skirt is one of my favorite Shabbos looks. It's simple, but the velvet makes it feel special. See how to style a velvet skirt.
- Corduroy skirts. For weekdays, a white blouse with a corduroy skirt is easy and warm. See the corduroy skirt guide.
- Long black skirts. Black and white always looks sharp. My long black skirt guide shows a few ways to keep it from feeling plain.
- Long denim skirts. A tucked white blouse with denim and boots is a relaxed winter outfit. See how to style a long denim skirt.
Winter colors that look best with white
White goes with everything, but some pairings feel especially wintry.
- White and camel. Warm and soft, perfect with a camel coat or skirt.
- White and burgundy. Rich and festive for Shabbos and the holidays.
- White and navy. Clean and classic for work.
- White and forest green. Pretty for Chanukah season.
- White, grey and black. A calm, polished mix that never looks wrong.

Outfit ideas
### Shabbos
A white blouse with a ruffled or bow neck, a burgundy or navy velvet skirt, sheer tights and low heels or loafers. Add pearl studs or a small brooch. See how to style pearls and how to style a brooch.

A white button-down under a navy or grey crew-neck sweater, a long wool skirt and ankle boots. Clean and professional. My polished modest workwear post and button-down shirt guide have more.
### Weekday errands
A white blouse under a chunky cardigan, a long denim skirt, sneakers or ankle boots and a puffer. Easy and warm.
### Winter simcha
A white silk blouse with a dark sequin or satin skirt and a velvet headband or dressy snood. The white keeps the outfit fresh instead of heavy. See how to style a sequin skirt and how to style a silk blouse.
Staying warm in a white blouse
A blouse alone won't keep you warm, so I build warmth in layers I can't see.
- A thin thermal or merino layer under the blouse adds real warmth without bulk. My fabric guide explains the difference between wool types.
- Opaque tights under a long skirt help a lot. See how to choose tights for long skirts.
- A long wool coat finishes the look outside. See what coat to wear with long skirts.

Keeping a white blouse white
Winter is hard on white: makeup on collars, coffee and dark sweaters shedding fibers. A few habits help.
- Wash white blouses only with whites, and treat collars and cuffs before washing.
- Hang them to dry instead of using a hot dryer, which can yellow some fabrics.
- Store them away from dark wool sweaters that shed.
- Put the blouse on before makeup when you can, or use a scarf to protect the collar while you get ready.
