How to Style a Grey Skirt: Modest Outfit Ideas for Winter

A grey skirt is one of the easiest pieces to own. It's softer than black, lighter than charcoal, and it goes with almost every color in your closet, from cream and camel to burgundy and navy.
A light or heather grey skirt also brightens up a winter wardrobe that can get a little dark. Here's how I wear mine for everyday, work and Shabbos.
Know your shade of grey
- Light grey. Soft and fresh, almost like a neutral cream. Lovely with pastels and winter white.
- Heather grey. Grey mixed with flecks of lighter and darker threads. Cozy and casual, like a favorite sweatshirt.
- Dove or silver grey. A cool, smooth grey that looks dressy, especially in satin or a fine wool.
- Mid grey. The classic flannel grey. Polished for work and easy to match.
If you already own a charcoal skirt, a lighter grey is a nice second skirt because it gives you a softer look with the same tops.
Skirt styles to look for
- Pleated midi or maxi. Moves beautifully and hides nothing you don't want shown. See how to style a pleated skirt.
- Knit skirt. Soft, stretchy and comfortable all day. More in how to style a knit skirt.
- Wool A-line or maxi. Warm and structured for cold days. See how to style a long wool skirt.
- Satin skirt. A silver-grey satin skirt looks festive for Shabbos and simchas. See how to style a satin skirt.
- Tweed or plaid. A grey check adds texture and feels a little preppy. See how to style a tweed skirt.
For modest dressing, choose a length that covers the knee when you sit, and check that lighter knits aren't see-through in daylight. A slip underneath helps. More in layering slips and shells.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Washed-out look. Light grey with a light grey top near the face can look flat. Add a cream, blush or deeper color up top.
- See-through knits. Light grey knit skirts can show through in bright light. Wear a slip.
- Clingy fabric. Thin jersey can cling when you walk. Choose a thicker knit or a pleated style.
- Too many greys that don't match. Warm and cool greys side by side can clash. Keep the shades close, or separate them with a different color.
