How to Style a Houndstooth Skirt (Modest Pattern Pairing for Fall and Winter)

Every fall there's one skirt I reach for the moment the air turns crisp, and lately it's been my houndstooth. That little broken-check pattern has been around forever, and I think that's exactly why it works. It looks classic, a little bit vintage, and somehow always put together, even on mornings when I've had about four minutes to get dressed.

But I know a lot of us hesitate with a patterned skirt. What do you wear on top? Can you add another pattern? Does it only work for the office? I've worn mine to work, to Shabbos lunch, to a vort and to the grocery store, so here's everything I've figured out about styling a houndstooth skirt modestly through fall and winter.
Choosing a houndstooth skirt you'll actually wear
Before the outfits, a few things make a big difference when you're choosing the skirt itself.
- Length. I look for a true midi (well below the knee, ideally mid-calf) or a maxi. Houndstooth is usually woven in a wool or wool-blend, which has enough body to hang nicely at a longer length and stays modest when you sit or climb stairs.
- Shape. An A-line midi is the easiest to wear and flatters almost everyone. A pleated midi feels softer and a bit more playful. A straight or column maxi is the most polished and looks beautiful with a long coat.
- Scale of the check. A small, tight houndstooth reads almost like a texture from a distance, so it's very easy to style. A large, bold houndstooth is a statement and wants simpler pieces around it.
- Color. Classic black and cream is the most versatile. Brown and camel feels warm and cozy and pairs with every autumn shade. You'll also find navy, grey, burgundy and green versions, which are lovely once you already have a neutral one.
- Lining. A lined skirt moves smoothly over tights and doesn't cling. If yours isn't lined, a half slip solves it.
The easiest formula: a solid top pulled from the pattern
If you take one thing from this post, let it be this: look at the colors inside the houndstooth, pick one, and wear it on top in a solid.
With a black and cream skirt, that means a black turtleneck, a cream sweater or an ivory blouse. With a brown and camel skirt, it's a camel knit, a chocolate turtleneck or a cream sweater. The outfit instantly looks intentional because everything ties back to the skirt.
My most-worn version is a black and cream A-line midi with a fitted black turtleneck, black opaque tights and black ankle boots. It's almost a uniform, and I mean that as a compliment. Everything in one color family from the waist down makes you look taller, and the pattern gets to be the only interesting thing.

Cozy knits for everyday
A houndstooth skirt and a chunky sweater is one of my favorite fall combinations. The smooth woven skirt and the textured knit balance each other really nicely.
- Cable-knit in cream. A cream cable-knit with a brown or camel houndstooth pleated midi is pure autumn. I tuck the front in loosely, add a cognac belt, and wear brown loafers with tights. My cable-knit sweater post shows more ways to wear one.
- Fine-gauge crewnecks. For the office or a meeting, a thinner sweater tucked in fully looks sleek and keeps the waistline clean.
- Long cardigans. A long cardigan in a solid neutral over a fitted top adds warmth without fighting the pattern. Keep the cardigan plain; this is not the moment for a printed one.
- Sweater vests. A solid sweater vest over a button-down with a houndstooth skirt has a lovely preppy, schoolgirl-grown-up feel.
When tucking a thicker knit, I just do a front tuck or let it sit at the high hip if the skirt is full. Bulky tucks under a fitted waistband never look good, and a belt over the sweater can hide a lot.
Dressing it up for Shabbos and simchas
Houndstooth isn't only a weekday pattern. With the right top, it becomes very elegant.
- A silky blouse. A burgundy, emerald or ivory blouse in a satin or silk-look fabric next to a black and white houndstooth maxi looks rich and grown-up. Add pearl earrings and a pump or a low block heel.
- A bow or a tie neck. A soft bow at the neckline pairs beautifully with the slightly vintage feel of houndstooth.
- A fitted knit with jewelry. A fine black knit with a statement brooch or a pearl necklace is simple and very Shabbos-appropriate.
- A long wool coat. In the evening, a long black or camel coat over the whole look feels instantly polished.
For Shabbos, I like a straight maxi length because it feels a little more formal than a full midi, and it photographs beautifully with a long coat on the way to shul.
How to mix houndstooth with other patterns
This is the part people ask me about the most. Can you pattern-mix with houndstooth while still looking calm and put together? Yes, if you follow a few simple rules.
- Change the scale. Pair a small houndstooth with a larger pattern, or the other way around. Two patterns at the same size tend to buzz.
- Share a color. If both pieces contain the same color, they look like they belong together. A black and cream houndstooth with a thin black and cream stripe is a classic.
- Keep one pattern quiet. Let the skirt be the star and choose a softer pattern on top, like a fine stripe, a pinstripe button-down or a small polka dot scarf.
- Add something solid in between. A solid cardigan, blazer or belt breaks up the two patterns and gives the eye a place to rest.
Combinations I genuinely wear:
- Black and cream houndstooth with a navy and white Breton-stripe top under a solid navy cardigan.
- Brown houndstooth with a camel and cream plaid scarf. Both are warm-toned, and the scarf is a much larger check.
- A small houndstooth with a polka dot silk scarf at the neck, which feels very Parisian.
If plaid is your next pattern adventure, my plaid skirt guide works the same way, and the tweed skirt post is great if you love woven textures. And if you're ready for something bolder, here's how I style a leopard print skirt so it still feels classic.
Coats and outer layers
Because houndstooth already has so much going on, I keep coats simple and solid.
- Long wool coat. Black, camel or charcoal. A coat that comes close to the hem of a maxi skirt looks the most elegant.
- Trench coat. For early fall, a classic trench over a brown houndstooth midi is lovely.
- Short tailored jacket or blazer. A solid blazer in a matching color makes it feel like a suit set.
Proportions matter here. A cropped jacket over a midi, or a long coat over a maxi, usually looks better than a coat that ends halfway down the skirt.

Tights and shoes
Tights do a lot of quiet work in a houndstooth outfit.
- Black opaque tights with a black and white skirt create that long, unbroken line I love, especially with black boots.
- Brown or chocolate tights with a brown houndstooth keep everything warm and soft.
- Sheer black tights are dressier and look lovely with pumps for a simcha.
As for shoes:
- Ankle boots are my everyday choice. A sleek black or brown boot with a slim heel looks great with a midi. My ankle boots with long skirts post covers which shapes work best.
- Loafers with tights are classic with houndstooth and very comfortable for a long day.
- Knee-high boots with a midi keep you warm and leave no gap between hem and boot.
- Pumps or block heels for Shabbos and evening events.
Accessories that work with the pattern
- Leather belts in black or cognac define the waist and break up a knit and a pattern.
- Gold or pearl jewelry. Pearls especially feel right with houndstooth's classic mood.
- Head coverings. A solid tichel or a beret in one of the skirt's colors looks very chic. A patterned scarf can work too if you follow the scale rule above.
Three outfits to try this week
Weekday: Black and cream houndstooth A-line midi, black turtleneck, black opaque tights, black ankle boots and a camel coat.
Weekend: Brown and camel houndstooth pleated midi, cream cable-knit sweater with a front tuck, cognac belt, brown tights and loafers.
Shabbos evening: Black and white houndstooth straight maxi, burgundy silky blouse, long black wool coat, black pumps and pearl earrings.
Caring for your houndstooth skirt
Most houndstooth skirts are wool or a wool blend, so a little care keeps them looking sharp for years. Brush the fabric gently after wearing, hang it to air out between wears, and steam out wrinkles instead of ironing directly. Spot-clean small marks and dry-clean or hand wash only when needed.
A good houndstooth skirt really is one of the hardest-working pieces in a modest fall wardrobe. Start with one solid top in a color from the pattern, add tights and boots, and you'll find yourself reaching for it all winter long.
