How to Style a Navy Skirt: Modest Outfit Ideas for Every Day and Shabbos

A navy skirt is the piece I reach for when I want to look put together without thinking too hard. It's softer than black, it hides a busy day, and it looks polished in a way that feels a little more relaxed. If you only own black skirts, a navy one is a lovely next step.
The trick is knowing what to wear with it, because navy can look heavy or flat if every piece around it is dark. Here's how I style mine.
Pick the right navy skirt
Navy skirts come in so many shapes that it helps to think about where you'll wear yours most.
- A-line midi or maxi. The easiest everyday shape. It moves well, works with flats or boots, and stays modest when you sit.
- Pleated. A navy pleated skirt looks crisp and a bit dressier. My guide to styling a pleated skirt has more ideas.
- Knit or jersey. Comfortable and great for long days, carpool and Shabbos afternoons.
- Satin or velvet. The dressy option for Shabbos, simchas and evenings out.
- Navy with a print. Florals, polka dots and plaids on a navy base are easy to wear because the dark background keeps the print calm.
For modest dressing, look for a length that covers the knee comfortably when you sit, a lining in lighter fabrics, and enough room through the hips that it doesn't cling.
The best colors with a navy skirt
Navy is a neutral, so it gets along with most colors. A few pairings look especially good.
- Navy and white or ivory. Fresh and classic. A white blouse with a navy skirt never looks wrong.
- Navy and camel. Warm and elegant, my favorite combination for fall and winter.
- Navy and grey. Calm and soft. I share more on this in how to style a grey sweater.
- Navy and blush or dusty pink. Pretty and gentle, lovely for Shabbos.
- Navy and burgundy. Rich and cozy, perfect for the holidays.
- Navy and mustard or rust. A bit unexpected, and great on a grey day.
The one pairing to be careful with is navy and black right next to each other, because it can look like a mismatch. If you want both, put something lighter between them, like a cream blouse or a camel scarf. My winter color combinations guide goes into this in more detail.

Tops and sweaters that work
The easiest way to keep a navy skirt from looking heavy is to wear something lighter on top.
### Blouses
A white or ivory blouse with a collar is the classic choice. Tuck it in or wear it out over a fitted skirt, depending on your shape. For winter, layer a sweater over it and let the collar and cuffs peek out. I wrote a whole post on how to style a white blouse in winter.
### Sweaters
Cream, oatmeal, camel and grey sweaters all look lovely with navy. A chunky cable knit makes it cozy, while a fine merino crew neck keeps it neat for work. A navy sweater with a navy skirt can also look great if the textures are different, like a ribbed knit with a smooth A-line skirt.
### Cardigans and blazers
A camel cardigan over a white tee and a navy skirt is one of the easiest outfits I know. For something sharper, try a camel or grey blazer. Both colors warm navy up.
Shoes and tights
Shoes change the whole feel of a navy skirt.
- Brown or cognac boots. Warm and casual, perfect with camel and cream.
- Burgundy loafers or flats. A small pop that still looks polished.
- Nude or blush flats. Soft and pretty for Shabbos.
- Navy or grey sneakers. Easy for errands and carpool.
For tights, navy opaque tights with navy shoes give you one long line, which looks very sleek. Nude sheer tights keep things light. Black tights can work too, as long as your shoes are black as well. My guide on choosing tights for long skirts explains how to match them.
Accessories that lift it
Navy is a great backdrop for accessories. Gold jewelry looks especially warm against it. A camel or plaid scarf, a cognac leather bag, or pearl studs all add something without making the outfit busy.
If you cover your hair, a snood or scarf in camel, cream, blush or soft grey ties the look together. Navy works too if your top is a lighter color.

Navy skirt outfit ideas
Here are a few combinations I come back to again and again.
For a regular weekday
- Navy A-line midi skirt, cream crew-neck sweater, cognac ankle boots, camel scarf.
- Navy knit maxi skirt, grey long-sleeve tee, white sneakers, denim jacket.
For work
- Navy pleated midi skirt, white collared blouse, camel blazer, burgundy loafers.
- Navy pencil-style midi with a gentle A-line, grey merino turtleneck, black block heels.
For Shabbos
- Navy satin midi skirt, blush ruffle-neck blouse, nude flats, pearl studs.
- Navy velvet maxi skirt, ivory high-neck blouse, gold earrings, camel coat.
For a cozy weekend
- Navy jersey maxi skirt, oatmeal cable-knit sweater, brown suede boots, chunky scarf.
- Navy floral skirt, blush cardigan, white tee, ballet flats.
How to wear a navy skirt in every season
In fall and winter, lean into texture and warmth: wool, corduroy, chunky knits, camel coats and boots. A long navy wool skirt with a camel coat is about as classic as it gets. See what coat to wear with long skirts for coat shapes that work with longer hemlines.
In spring and summer, keep it light with linen or cotton navy skirts, white or striped tops, and tan sandals or espadrilles. Navy and white with a straw bag always feels fresh.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Too much dark. A navy skirt with a black top, black tights and black shoes can look heavy. Add one light piece near your face.
- Forgetting proportion. A full skirt looks best with a neater top, and a slim skirt can take a looser sweater.
- Mismatched blues. A bright royal blue next to navy can look accidental. If you mix blues, make the difference obvious, like light chambray with dark navy.
Frequently asked questions
What color top goes best with a navy skirt?
White, ivory, cream, camel, grey and blush are the easiest. Burgundy and mustard are great when you want a bit more color.
Can you wear black shoes with a navy skirt?
Yes. It works best when your tights or top also have some black, so the shoes look intentional. Brown, cognac and burgundy shoes are usually softer with navy.
Is a navy skirt dressy enough for Shabbos?
Absolutely. Choose satin, velvet or a fine pleated fabric, and pair it with a pretty blouse and simple jewelry.
What's the difference between navy and black for a modest wardrobe?
Both are easy neutrals. Navy feels a little softer and warmer, and it looks especially nice with camel, cream and brown, while black is sharper and more formal.
A good navy skirt earns its place quickly. Start with one you love, add a few light tops and one warm pair of boots, and you'll have outfits for weekdays, work and Shabbos all season.
