A Guide to Rothy's Flats: Styles, Sizing Tips and How to Wear Them
Rothy's is one of the brands I get asked about most in our group chats. Their knit flats show up at shul, at school pickup, at the office and at weddings (in the bag, for the dancing). If you've been curious about them, here is a simple guide to the styles, how to choose, and how to wear them.
What makes Rothy's different
Rothy's is known for knitting many of its shoes from a thread made with recycled plastic bottles, and for making many styles machine washable. You can check each product page for the exact materials and care instructions, since they vary by style and collection.
For everyday life, washability is the big deal. Flats get dirty, and being able to clean them at home makes them last much longer than a pair you can only wipe down.
The main flat styles
The Point. A classic pointed-toe flat. This is the most versatile shape: the point lengthens the leg, which is especially helpful with midi and maxi skirts. If you only buy one, this is the one I'd start with.
The Bow Point and the Knot Point. The same pointed shape with a sweet detail on the toe. The bow version looks a little more feminine and works beautifully for Shabbos and events. The knot is a little more modern.
The D'Orsay Point. Cut lower at the sides, which shows a sliver of the arch. It looks elegant and a bit dressier.
Loafers and sneakers. Rothy's also makes loafers, mary janes and casual styles. Loafers are great with pleated and denim skirts.

Sizing tips
Knit shoes tend to give a little with wear, so many people like them snug (but not painful) at first. Every foot is different, though, so:
- Read the size notes on the product page for each style. Different shapes can fit differently.
- Read recent reviews from people with a foot shape like yours.
- Check the return and exchange policy before you buy.
How to wear them
With midi skirts. A pointed flat is the perfect partner for a midi or maxi skirt. Choose a color close to your skin tone to lengthen the leg, or a bright color as the fun part of the outfit.
For work. Black, navy or a neutral pointed flat with tailored skirts and fine knits. Polished, comfortable and easy to commute in.
For Shabbos. A bow or knot style in a metallic or a rich color with a satin skirt and a soft sweater.
For weddings. Keep a pair in your bag for dancing, or wear a dressier metallic style the whole night.
With jeans and trousers. A pointed flat with cropped trousers is a classic look.
Picking colors
- Neutral (black, tan, nude): goes with everything; buy this first.
- Navy: a softer alternative to black.
- Prints and texture (woven, bouclé, animal print): add interest to simple outfits.
- Brights (red, pink, blue): the easiest way to make a plain outfit feel happy.
Care
Always follow the care label. For machine-washable styles, the usual approach is to remove the insoles, use a cold, gentle cycle, and let them air dry. Don't put them in the dryer.
Are they worth it?
It depends on how you'll use them. If you need one comfortable, polished flat that you'll wear several times a week, a washable pair can work out well on a cost-per-wear basis. If you only need a flat for occasional events, there are many lower-priced options.
Rothy's runs sales on certain colors from time to time. When I find real markdowns, I list them with the current price and the original price on my best deals this week page. You can also see the Rothy's styles I've picked on my Rothy's page and all my Shoes.
Quick answers
Are knit flats good for wide feet? Knit uppers have some give, which many people with wider feet find comfortable. Check each style's fit notes and reviews, since some shapes run narrower.
Can I wear them in rain or snow? Knit shoes aren't designed as winter boots. For wet days, wear waterproof boots for the walk and change into flats indoors.
Do they work for standing all day? Many teachers and nurses like cushioned flats, but comfort is personal. Try them around the house first, while you can still return them.
What color should I buy first? A neutral close to your skin tone or black. Once you have a staple pair, a fun color or print is a great second pair.
