How to Style a Shirt Dress (Modest Outfit Ideas)

A shirt dress is the closest thing I have to a uniform. It has a collar, buttons, sleeves and a long skirt all in one piece, so there's nothing to match and nothing to tuck. I can wear the same dress to drop-off, to work and to a Shabbos lunch just by changing the shoes and what goes on top.
Here's how I pick them and the ways I wear them most.
What to look for in a modest shirt dress
Not every shirt dress works for modest dressing. A few small details make a big difference.
- Length. Look for a midi that falls well below the knee or a full maxi. Sit down in it and check that the skirt still covers your knees and doesn't ride up at the slit.
- Button spacing. Buttons that are far apart gape at the chest. Look for close buttons or a hidden placket. If it gapes a little, a small safety pin or a snap sewn between buttons fixes it.
- Collar. A classic point collar or a band collar buttons all the way up. If the top button sits low, plan on a shell or a turtleneck underneath.
- Sleeves. Long sleeves with a button cuff are the easiest. Elbow sleeves work with a fitted layer underneath for colder months.
- Fabric. Cotton poplin is crisp and easy for spring and early fall. Denim and chambray are casual and sturdy. Flannel and wool blends are warm for winter. Thin viscose drapes nicely but can cling, so check it in the light.
- Skirt shape. A gathered or A-line skirt gives room to walk and sit. A straight skirt looks sleek but often needs a slit, so check how high it goes.
The simple weekday look
This is how I wear a shirt dress most of the time.
- Button it all the way, add the matching belt or a thin leather one at the waist
- Roll the sleeves once if it's warm, keep them down if it's not
- Add white sneakers, ballet flats or loafers
A denim or chambray shirt dress with clean sneakers is my go-to for busy days. It looks put together with zero thought.

Layered for fall and winter
A shirt dress layers better than almost anything else in my closet.
- Turtleneck underneath. Wear a fine-knit turtleneck under the dress and leave the top button or two open so the collar of the knit shows. Cream under camel, black under olive, or ivory under navy all look polished.
- Sweater on top. Throw a crewneck sweater over the dress and let the collar peek out at the neck. The skirt then looks like a separate skirt. Tie a belt over the sweater if you want a waist.
- Long cardigan. A long cardigan in a soft neutral over a printed shirt dress is cozy and still neat.
- Tights and boots. Opaque tights with knee-high or ankle boots make a midi shirt dress work on cold days.
If you don't have a turtleneck that layers well, my turtleneck guide has the colors and fabrics I like best.
Dressed up for Shabbos and simchas
Shirt dresses aren't only casual. In the right fabric they look elegant.
- Pick a dress in a silky fabric, a soft crepe or a rich color like burgundy, emerald or deep navy
- Swap the fabric belt for a thin gold or patent belt
- Add pearl studs or a simple pendant
- Wear block heels, pointed flats or low pumps
A long silky shirt dress with a fitted blazer over it is one of my favorite Shabbos outfits. It's comfortable through a long meal and still looks dressy in photos.
Ways to belt it
The belt changes the whole shape of the dress.
- Matching tie belt. The easiest option. Tie it in a soft knot to the side.
- Thin leather belt. Looks cleaner and a little more grown-up.
- Wide belt. Good for a looser dress that needs more shape at the waist.
- No belt. A straight, unbelted shirt dress looks relaxed and is very comfortable for maternity or long days.
Outerwear that works
Because a shirt dress has a long skirt, the coat matters.
- A trench coat the same length or a little shorter than the dress is a classic match. See how I style a trench coat.
- A denim jacket makes a printed or floral shirt dress feel casual. More ideas in my denim jacket guide.
- A long wool coat covers most of the skirt and keeps you warm. I explain lengths in what coat to wear with long skirts.

Shoes for every version
- Sneakers for denim, chambray and cotton dresses on casual days
- Loafers for a smart weekday look with almost any fabric
- Ballet flats for a softer, feminine look
- Ankle boots with tights for fall and winter
- Block heels for Shabbos, simchas and evenings
Colors and prints that are easy to wear
If you're buying your first shirt dress, start with a solid. Navy, olive, camel, black and denim blue all go with most shoes and layers you already own. Once you have a solid one, try a small print like a tiny floral, a thin stripe or a soft plaid. Small prints hide wrinkles and look good all day.
Quick fixes for common problems
- Gaping at the chest: sew in a small snap between buttons, or wear a shell underneath.
- Skirt too sheer: add a half slip. I go through options in layering slips and shells.
- Slit too high: have a tailor stitch it partway closed. It's a quick, cheap fix.
- Too long on you: take it up from the hem so the skirt still hits mid-calf or lower.
The bottom line
One good shirt dress can do the work of a whole outfit. Wear it plain with sneakers on a weekday, layer a turtleneck and boots under it in winter, and switch to a silky one with heels for Shabbos. Start with a solid neutral, check the buttons and the length, and you'll reach for it all year.
