How to Style a Quilted Jacket (Modest Weekend Looks)

A quilted jacket is the piece I grab when I'm heading out the door and don't want to think. It's light but warm, it doesn't wrinkle, and it makes a long skirt and sweater look like a real outfit. It's perfect for weekend errands, a walk in the park with the kids, or a long Sunday drive.
It does take a little thought to make a short, boxy jacket look right over long skirts and dresses. Here's how I'd wear one modestly, all through fall and into early spring.
Choosing the right quilted jacket
There are a few styles to know before you shop.
- The classic cropped quilted jacket. Hip length, with a diamond quilt and a corduroy collar. It's the most common style and the easiest to wear with a full maxi skirt.
- The barn jacket. A canvas jacket with a cord collar and big pockets, often lined. It's a little more rugged and very relaxed.
- The long quilted coat. Knee length or longer. This one covers more, keeps you warmer, and works over almost any skirt length.
- The quilted vest. Great as a layer over a sweater on milder days, but you'll still want full sleeves underneath.
For a modest wardrobe, I'd start with either a cropped jacket that hits at the hip or a long quilted coat. A jacket that stops right at the waist can make a long skirt look a bit chopped in half.
Color matters too. Olive and navy are the classics and go with almost everything. Tan, camel and chocolate brown feel warm and soft. Black is the most polished, and cream is pretty but shows dirt quickly.
What to wear under it
A quilted jacket is thin, so what you layer underneath does most of the work in cold weather.
A fitted turtleneck. A ribbed turtleneck in cream, oatmeal or brown keeps your neck covered and looks neat in the open collar of the jacket. This is my favorite combination.
A chunky sweater. A cable knit or a soft crewneck sweater adds warmth. Size up in the jacket if you plan to wear thick knits under it, so the sleeves don't feel tight.
A collared blouse. A crisp white or striped shirt with the collar out over the jacket looks fresh and a little preppy, especially in early fall and spring.
A knit dress. A long-sleeve, high-neck sweater dress under a quilted jacket is the easiest one-piece outfit there is.

The best skirts to pair with it
Since the jacket is short and structured, it looks best with a skirt that has some movement.
- A pleated maxi skirt. The soft flow of pleats looks lovely next to the stiff quilting. Camel, rust or chocolate pleats with an olive jacket is one of my favorite fall pairings.
- A plaid or tweed skirt. A warm plaid skirt in terracotta or brown under a tan or navy quilted coat feels cozy and seasonal.
- A denim maxi skirt. A dark denim skirt with a quilted jacket and sneakers is the ultimate weekend look.
- A corduroy skirt. Corduroy and quilting both have that relaxed, countryside feel, so they look natural together.
- A knit midi skirt. A ribbed knit skirt with matching sweater under a quilted jacket looks soft and put together.
One tip: if your jacket is cropped, a skirt with a defined waist helps. It keeps the outfit from looking boxy.
Quilted jackets over dresses
A quilted jacket also works well over dresses, which is helpful on Shabbos afternoons or when you want to feel a little more dressed up.
Try a navy quilted jacket over a long cream sweater dress with brown tights and loafers. Or wear an olive jacket over a floral long-sleeve maxi for a softer, earlier-fall look. A long quilted coat over a midi dress covers almost the whole length, so it's great for cold, windy days.

Shoes that work
A quilted jacket is casual, so most comfortable shoes look right.
- Ankle boots in brown, tan or black. Make sure your skirt hem meets or covers the top of the boot.
- Knee-high boots with a midi skirt, so nothing shows between the hem and the boot.
- Loafers with opaque tights for a classic, tidy look.
- Clean sneakers in white or cream for errands and long walks.
- Rain boots on wet days, which fit the countryside look of the jacket perfectly.
Accessories
Keep accessories simple and warm. A wool scarf in plaid or a solid camel color fills the open neck of the jacket nicely. A leather crossbody or a canvas tote is more practical than a structured handbag here. If you cover your hair, a knit snood or a soft cotton scarf in a coordinating neutral looks lovely with this look.
Quick outfit ideas
- Saturday night out for pizza: olive quilted jacket, cream turtleneck, camel pleated maxi skirt, brown ankle boots.
- Coffee run: navy quilted jacket, cream ribbed sweater dress, brown tights, cognac loafers.
- Park walk: long tan quilted coat, chocolate turtleneck, terracotta plaid maxi skirt, knee-high boots, plaid scarf.
- Errands: black quilted jacket, striped long-sleeve tee, dark denim maxi skirt, white sneakers.
Caring for your quilted jacket
Most quilted jackets can be machine washed on a gentle, cold cycle, but check the label first, especially on waxed or wool styles. Close all the snaps and zippers, wash it alone, and hang it to dry so the padding stays even. A waxed barn jacket should never go in the washer; wipe it clean and rewax it once a season.
A good quilted jacket is easy to wear, easy to care for, and goes with almost everything in a modest closet. Pick a length that suits your skirts and a color that matches your neutrals, and it'll be on repeat until spring.
