10 Easy Fall Outfit Formulas That Always Work
Fall is my favorite season to get dressed. The light gets softer, the colors get warmer, and suddenly all the pieces that felt too heavy in July make sense again. But it is also the season when I hear the same thing over and over in our group chats: "I have a full closet and nothing to wear."

- Where to start
Most of the time the problem is not the clothes. It is that we don't have a few go-to formulas we can repeat without thinking. A formula is just a recipe: a type of top, a type of bottom, a shoe and one finishing piece. Once you know a handful, you can mix and match the whole season.
Here are the ten I come back to again and again. Every one of them works for modest dressing, and none of them needs anything trendy or expensive.
1. Chunky knit + satin midi skirt + pointed flats
This is the outfit I'd wear every single day if I could. The contrast between a soft, slightly oversized sweater and a skirt with a bit of sheen looks intentional and pulled together, even though it takes about thirty seconds to put on.
Tuck the front of the sweater loosely, or let it hang if the knit is short enough. Pointed flats keep the line long so the skirt doesn't swallow you. Stick to one tone (cream with champagne, camel with chocolate) and it looks even more expensive.
2. Fine merino crew + pleated skirt + loafers
A thin merino sweater is the most useful knit you can own. It layers under jackets, it doesn't add bulk under a skirt waistband, and it looks neat all day. Pair it with a pleated midi or maxi skirt and loafers for a slightly preppy look that works for the office, school pickup or a lunch out.
3. Sweater dress + long cardigan + ankle boots
A knit dress is basically pajamas that look like an outfit. Add a long cardigan or a duster in a matching or neighboring color and you have a full look. Ankle boots with a little heel make it feel grown-up. If the dress is fitted, a long cardigan also adds coverage and softens the shape.
4. Button-down shirt + denim maxi skirt + white sneakers
Denim skirts are everywhere in modest wardrobes for a reason: they are durable, easy to wash and go with everything. A crisp button-down (striped or white) keeps it sharp. Roll the sleeves, tuck the front, add clean sneakers. Swap the sneakers for loafers on cooler days.
5. Turtleneck + slip skirt + long coat
A fitted turtleneck under a bias-cut skirt is one of those combinations that always looks elegant. It covers the neck and arms completely, so it is perfect for modest dressing, and the coat on top turns it into a real cold-weather outfit. Black on black with a camel coat is a classic for a reason.
6. Cardigan buttoned as a top + A-line skirt + mary janes
Buttoning a fitted cardigan all the way and wearing it as a top is a trick I love. It looks a little vintage, a little French. Pair it with a full A-line skirt and mary janes or ballet flats. Add a thin shell or tee underneath if the cardigan is low cut.
7. Knit vest over a long-sleeve tee + wide trousers
If you wear trousers, a sweater vest layered over a fitted long-sleeve top is a cozy, polished look. Wide-leg trousers balance the shape. It is a great "between seasons" outfit for those mornings that start cold and end warm.
8. Midi dress + belted cardigan + tall boots
Take a summer midi dress and make it fall: throw a cardigan over it, add a thin belt at the waist, and finish with tall boots. This is my favorite way to keep wearing the dresses I love all year, and it is a great way to stretch a wardrobe without buying anything new.
9. Tonal neutrals head to toe
Pick one color family (oatmeal, camel, cream, grey) and wear every piece in it: knit, skirt, coat and even shoes. A tonal outfit looks calm and elegant, and it is the easiest way to look "put together" without trying. Vary the textures so it doesn't look flat: a ribbed knit with a smooth skirt and a suede shoe.
10. Simple dress + statement shoe
Some days the dress does all the work. A plain navy or black midi with a fun shoe (a bow flat, a red mule, a woven loafer) is enough. This is also the easiest formula for holidays and weekend meals, because the shoe adds the personality and the dress stays timeless.
How to build your own formulas
Look at the three or four outfits you actually wore the most last fall. Write down what each one was made of, not the specific pieces but the categories: "knit, long skirt, flat." That is your personal formula. Then check whether you have at least two or three versions of each piece in it. If you don't, that is the gap worth filling, not another random top.
A few other tips:
- Shoes decide the mood. The same skirt and sweater feel relaxed with sneakers, polished with loafers and dressy with a heel. If you want more outfits, add one more type of shoe before you add more clothes.
- Layers should be thin. For modest dressing especially, you'll often wear a shell under a cardigan under a coat. Fine knits and thin layers keep that from feeling bulky.
- Repeat without guilt. Nobody notices that you wore the same skirt twice in a week. They notice when an outfit looks easy and confident.
Where to start
If I had to pick just three pieces to make all ten formulas work, it would be a soft neutral knit, a midi skirt in a fabric with a little movement, and a comfortable pointed flat. You'll find some of my current favorites on the Knits, Skirts and Shoes pages, and I keep the best deals this week page updated when good pieces go on sale.
Happy fall, and happy dressing.
